A lot of items we use at home contain chemicals that are either flammable, poisonous or irritating when used incorrectly. In the hands of adults at home, it’s normally safe.  However, when you have boisterous kids running around and grabbing things as they wish, it wouldn’t hurt to take extra precautions.

It goes without saying that harsh cleaners, paint products, insecticides, and similar compounds should be stored in a dry, safe place away from children’s reach.

To further avoid untoward incidents with chemicals at home, another option is to replace the dangerous compounds with alternatives concocted from regular household items.  There are many home substitutes for commercial products that you can mix in a few minutes.  Here are a few you can experiment with:

* Disinfectants - You can use borax dissolved in hot water.
* Over cleaner - Try a pasty mix of baking soda, salt and water.
* Window Cleaner - Combine 3/4 cup of water, 1 tablespoonful of vinegar and 3 spoonfuls of lime juice in a water spray bottle.
* Toilet Cleaner - Mix 3 spoonfulls of baking soda for whitening and half a cup of vinegar for cleaning.  Leave it in the toilet for 30 minutes before scrubbing.
* Grease Stains - Use a mixed paste of cornstarch and water.
* Floor Wax - use soap suds and thick boiled starch in equal parts.
* Furniture Cleaner - Two parts olive oil plus one part lemon juice should do the trick.

There are a lot more home concoctions that can help keep your home in order without the dangers presented by keeping harsh chemicals inside.
