Oil-based paints are low-cost finishing solutions for interior paint jobs.  While they cost less, they are slow drying and will need to be left for some amount of time to lose their odor.  Putting open charcoal in the room will definitel help.

Latex paints are popular finishes that can be purchased in pre-mixed hues.   They are water-based, loose, odor-free, fast-drying and easy to wash off.  They are a bit more expensive than oil-based finishes but are cheap enough to warrant recommendation.

Alkyd paint is a synthetic-based paint that adheres to surfaces most other paints won’t.   More expensive than latex, they are also longer lasting and have a visibly thicker appearance on painted surfaces.  It is also highly odorous, slow-drying and a mess to clean up, requiring thinners for removal.

Acrylic paint is almost the same as latex although it is faster to apply and may not be suitable for all purposes.  Always ask the hardware store about whether the acrylic paint you are looking at can be used for the surface you are planning to work on.

Urethane is a good paint for additional coating over other types of paints.  Fire-retardant paints are becoming more popular now and are great for use in potentially fire-prone areas of the home.
